Obituary of Adeline Shipp

SHIPP, Adeline M., age 101, died on Saturday, August 29, 2009. Born in Bloomfield, she lived in Pompton Lakes before moving to Mahwah in 1962. Adeline was a Sunday School teacher at the Dutch Reformed Church in Pompton Lakes for 14 years; she was a member of the Pompton Lakes First Aid Squad for many years and was the first female to drive the ambulance. She started the first Girl Scout Troop in Pompton Lakes, which became the largest Troop in the nation at the time. Later being inducted into the Juliet Lowe Circle, she remained active in Girl Scouting for most of her life. Adeline was president of the PTA in Pompton Lakes during the early 1950s. She enjoyed bowling, playing bridge, gardening and was an expert on wild flowers and trees of New Jersey. At age 65 she accepted a position at National Veterinary Laboratory in Franklin Lakes as an Administrative Assistant, where she remained until age 90. Adeline is survived by her son Dr. Robert Shipp of Manhattan, her brother Kenneth Marsters of Graham, NC, her beloved grand nieces Debra Clark of Kearny, and Gretchen Jean Moncelsi, with whom she lived, along with Gretchen's husband Anthony, until her death. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews, great grand nieces and nephews. As per Mrs. Shipp's wishes, she will be cremated. Friends may visit the family on Sept. 5 from 12:00 to 2:00pm at her home, 28 Turners Lake Drive, Mahwah, NJ. Arrangements by the Vander Plaat Funeral Home, (www.vpfh.com) 257 Godwin Ave., Wyckoff. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey, 95 Newark Pompton Turnpike, Riverdale, N.J. 07457 would be greatly appreciated.
