Obituary of Raymond Reed
Raymond J. Reed, Sr. age 87, died in Marco Island, FL on May 11, 2009.A former resident of Franklin Lakes and Barnegat Light, NJ, Ray was born in Jersey City on August 9, 1921 to Henrietta & Raymond Reed. He served in the Army in WWII & was captured by Germans during the Battle of the Bulge in 1944. He was liberated from the POW camp in April, 1945. He was awarded the a Purple Heart, 2 Bronze Stars and an Oak Cluster for Valor. Ray graduated from Seaton Hall University in 1950. Ray married Margaret McKenna in 1947. He started his professional insurance career with the Travelers Agency ultimately developing the Raymond J. Reed Agency for Knights of Columbus in Union, NJ He also enjoyed serving as an officer in several professional, fraternal, and civic organizations. Ray & Margaret (deceased) moved to Marco Island in 1988. They enjoyed playing tennis and traveling. Both were devout Catholics. Ray was passionate fisherman and loved the tranquility of oceans and lakes. Mr. Reed is survived by his 6 children: Raymond and Randy Reed, Shawnee KS, Joseph and Evelyn Reed, Franklin Lakes, Susan Reed, Fairway, KS, Elizabeth Reed and James McNair, Wilmette, IL, Therese Reed and Robert Cook, Andover, MA, Christine Reed and Scott Harper, Kensington, MD and 15 grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Jack Reed and sister Dorothy Smith. His brother, Bill is deceased. Ray Reed loved God, his family, his friends and his country. Friends may visit on Thursday, 6/25 7-9 PM at Vander Plaat Funeral Home, 257 Godwin Ave., Wyckoff. Funeral Mass, Friday, 6/26 10:00 AM at Most Blessed Sacrament R.C. Church, 787 Franklin Lakes Rd., Franklin Lakes. Interment, Christ the King Cemetery, Franklin Lakes.
