Obituary of Helena T. Deeks

Deeks, Helena T. (nee Tancik) age 89 of Ridgewood, formerly of Midland Park, died Wednesday, May 20, 2009. Born in New York City, she grew up in Czechoslovakia, and returned to the United States in 1934. After graduating in 1940 from the Columbia College School of Nursing, she married her husband Arthur J. Deeks, Sr. in 1941 and thereafter moved to Lake Placid, NY. While residing there, she served as President of the Girls Scout Council of Lake Placid. In 1954, the family moved to Midland Park, where they lived for 40 years. During that time, she was active in the Democratic Party Organization and worked as a health home companion. In 1998, she moved to Ridgewood. She was predeceased by her husband Arthur in 1974 and her son Martin G. Deeks in 2003. Surviving are her sons Arthur and his wife Shirley of Lewes, DE; and Jonathan of Franklin, NC. Also surviving are 6 grandchildren: Sean and Jason; Morgan; Diana Kessler (nee Deeks); Jeremy, and Laura; and 4 great grandchildren: Zachary, Joslin, Teah and Sylvie. The family will have a gathering of friends on Tuesday, May 26, 2009 from 2 �" 6 p.m. at the Olthuis Funeral Home, 159 Godwin Ave. Midland Park, NJ. Private Cremation was held.
