Obituary of John A. Komninos

Komninos, John A. age 93 of Upper Saddle River passed away on Thursday, August 13, 2015. Born in New York City and raised in Long Beach, NY. He lived in Upper Saddle River for 50 years. John was an Army 1st Lieutenant who served in northern Europe during World War II. John was an executive in the textile chemical industry with Geigy Chemical Corp., Ardsley, NY and Millmaster Onyx Corp., Lyndhurst, NJ for many years before his retirement. John was an original and very active member of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Wyckoff, and a 50+ year member of AHEPA. Surviving is his wife of 64 years, Cleopatra (nee Catherines) Komninos, his son, Thomas Komninos and his wife Winifred, and his daughter, Marie Foti. Also surviving are his grandsons, Jason Komninos and Michael Foti. He was predeceased by his grandson, Stephen John Komninos in 2007, his brother, Dr. Anthony Komninos and his sisters, Irene Pappas and Patricia Komninos. In addition to his family, John was most proud of his Greek heritage including that his ancestors ruled the Byzantine Empire from 1081 A.D. to 1185 A.D. from Constantinople (now Istanbul). John's parents fled Asia Minor (now Turkey) during the persecution of Christians by Muslims in the early 20th century. John's favorite pastime was playing golf. He was a long-time member of the Upper Montclair County Club and Club Champion in 1952. John passed up the opportunity to become a professional golfer so that he could start a family.
