The morning before Mom died I read to her the Gospel of the day from Mark Ch 12. Mom lived this message and I would like to read you part of it. "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these."
Mom lover her neighbor as herself. She was generous and thoughtful to others. She gave everyone she met a warm smile and kind hello. Mom made friends wherever she went. She was known for her desserts, cakes, pies and brownies. Mom always made you feel welcome and cared for. She was happy and always had a positive attitude. Mom saw the good in others and was quick to forgive. She loved her family, grandkids, and friends dearly.
Mom loved the Lord and had faith that God would help her thru any difficulties and crosses. When she was 12 years old her Father died of cancer, and when mom was 48 her mom died of cancer. Mom told us for years she would never take chemotherapy! It was her biggest fear.
In January of this year (2015) mom was diagnosed with Leukemia AML. The Doctor told her she would need to take chemo or he would send her home with hospice. With God's help mom faced her fear and chose to take chemo.
We prayed to Our Blessed Mother, Our Lady of Lourdes to intercede and pray for Mom's protection from chemo side effects. Our Lady answered these prayers in a beautiful way. Mom received a card from us, and when she opened the card she said she smelled the most beautiful, fragrant, fresh roses smell. She believed Our Lady was with her and this was a sign from Heaven. We believed as well. Mom was the only one who smelled the roses.
Mom would spend 2 months in the hospital and undergo 3 chemo rounds. Each time Mom would bounce back quickly from the chemo and didn't suffer any severe side effects. She spent 2 months at home and was able to still bake, shop and spend time with friends and family.
While at the hospital, her Doctor called her his "ideal patient" because of her positive attitude and demeanor. Nurses nicknamed her the "movie star" because every day she would do her makeup and hair. She would tell me she felt like she was on vacation at the hospital.
When mom was in the ICU nurses that had cared for her came to visit her. Mom had the golden touch with people's hearts.
One of my mom's favorite prayers was the Prayer of St. Francis. The last lines read "In Dying we are born to eternal life." My Mom died on my son's 5th Birthday. It is my hope that she shares a birthday with my son. Her birthday is to heaven.
However, just in case she might need some prayers please continue to pray for her because we know she will use those prayers to help others if she no longer needs them for herself.
Love you mom, thanks for being the best Mom!!! Thank you God for my wonderful Mom!!! We were so blessed to have her!!!

I found a card with a poem in it that my Mom had given to my Grandmother on Mother's Day 1969 and the words of the card so beautifully sum up my feelings about my Mom too. So this is for you Mom:
Dear Mother: This comes today to thank you for the things you did for me to make my childhood wonderful and as happy as could be, For magic laughter that could make me smile through childish tears, For all the patience and the care You've shown throughout the years, For having such a generous heart, For being thoughtful too, And all the little kindnesses that are a part of you, You've been an inspiration and a gentle, guiding hand, Both a mother and a friend To care and understand-- No wonder that I'm grateful, More than words can ever say, No wonder I love you more with each and every day-- So may the happiness and joy that you have given others, be yours always, for you have been the dearest of all mothers.

I am so saddened to hear of the passing of Kathy. The picture above captures the beauty of her spirit. Always smiling, always pleasant no matter what the circumstances. I pray that her family takes some comfort knowing that she is resting peacefully in our Lord's kingdom. Surely he brought her home and was pleased with the way she lived her life and spread warmth and love to others. I will miss you, Kathy. Until we meet again.
