Obituary of Alec Hurst

Hurst, Alec James (Jim), Jr., passed away on May 9, 2015 at his home in Wyckoff, NJ. Jim was born on May 19, 1927, in Vero Beach, Florida, to Alec James Hurst, Sr. and Edith Louise Lowden Hurst. Jim taught American History and coached at Tenafly High School from 1965 to 2000. He developed the wrestling program and coached football, baseball, track, and swimming. The last ten years of his career he became certified in sports medicine and acted as Tenafly's team trainer. Because of his love of American History, he became a vital part of the restoration of the famous landmark home The Hermitage in Ho Ho Kus and worked as their very first historian. He lectured as an expert on the Revolutionary War and the Hermitage widely throughout the area. He leaves his wife, Nancy Garner Hurst and three children: Midge and David King of Midland Park, NJ, Alecia and Matthew Walton of Glen Ridge, NJ and John and Chimene Hurst of Orlando, FL. He was "Gramps" to eight grandchildren: Brielle and Garret King, Ava and Greyson Walton and Keegan, Miles, Noah and Luca Hurst. He is survived by one brother, Edwin L. and his wife Glenda Hurst of Dunedin, FL. The family will receive friends at the Vander Plaat Funeral Home, www.vpfh.com, 257 Godwin Avenue, Wyckoff, NJ on Tuesday, May 12, 2015 from 5:00 - 8:00 PM.
