Boy, I certainly am going to miss you... Hard to talk with others without getting my eyes wet or stopping in a middle of a phone call cause I'm trying to keep my composure from the emotions.... You believing in me, while others couldn't, has made me stand tall... When I think of all those memories we had, they were amazing and each one puts a smile on my face.... It was truly a privilege and an honor to be your son and your caretaker... However, I think by using the word "caretaker" makes it sound more like a job, rather than what I felt, which was a privilege, even on the tough days....
You were always ready and prepared for anything or everything and NEVER let us down.....I appreciate that so much... As a parent, I see how difficult that can be... I realize, I can not rely anymore on your wisdom that you gave me everyday until you passed...Nor the many pep talks you gave me...Your words and presence kept my spirits up when things weren't working out, like I thought they would... However, even though it probably took me too long to "get it"....You have given me the tools, I will need for this next chapter in my life....Thank you for your patience : )
You were so much fun... Whether talking about sports, politics or your favorite subject, your family... From your youngest great grandchild, Nicholas to the oldest grandchild, John.... Showing interest in everyone, all combined are at 16 (and counting!)... Not to mention your own children, Dan, Bit, Kathleen and myself... You had a wonderful sense of humor, while having so much class in everything you did...By others that have spoke or have written to me, who knew you, words on what they remember you by are; classy, great, wonderful, beautiful, amazing, privileged to have known her and loved her like my own mom are comments from people who are not even related to our family...
In many ways, I feel I have fallen short to the expectations I wanted you to see....Even though, you NEVER let me feel, I failed.... Hopefully, I can get better and achieve my goals and have you smile from above... Knowing you are always being thought of with much love.... Love you always, Jame

I knew the day would eventually come when grandma would no longer be here but there was something about her that just made you think no matter what her condition was that it wouldn't happen today. Grandma has survived a life threatening stoke in her 50's with emergency brain surgery, following that she had a few skin cancer scares, and then both the loss of her husband and her son. I always understood she survived these moments with courage and grace because of her love and devotion to her family. So as each day went by over these past few months, while I knew it was inevitable, each day I felt certain it wouldn't be that day.
When Jamie called Wednesday morning to tell me she passed in the early hours even then she did it with courage and grace by making sure she made it through her daughter's 70th birthday which was the day before. That was the spirit of grandma.
It should be enough for me to know she gave to each of us in her own way… a special thought or part of herself. To my father she gave patience and kindness and the nickname "Bitsy" that would follow him though out his life. To my mother she gave the unconditional love and acceptance of a mother rather than a mother-in-law. To my brother John she gave a passion for politics and social liberalism. To my brother Richie (even though he may not have been aware of it) she gave him the poem "If" that he so eloquently read at my father's funeral. To me she gave summers in Williamsburg, Virginia with my cousins and an over whelming understanding to the value of family.
She led a wonderful life. She laughed and smiled and celebrated as often as she could. She was and is loved by each one of us here and those who passed. She traveled the world in the most elegant manner even cruising the Atlantic to attend the coronation of Queen Elizabeth in 1953. Most importantly she had the opportunity to watch her family grow and made the most of it. My memories tell me it was a couple times a month we would travel to grandma's to celebrate someone's birthday or a holiday. We swam, played tennis in the back yard, then football on the front lawn and ping pong, air hockey and shuffle board in the basement all this was followed by an exuberant and slightly off-key rendition (except for Lynnette, Bridget, and Tyler of course) of "Happy Birthday." She taught us to live, love and laugh and I have the pictures and videos to prove it J
It's not just that I will miss her as my grandma, but as part of the spirit behind so many happy memories of my life.

I remember my great grandma always being a part of our "side projects" at family get togethers. Whether it was making a human pyramid, karaoke singing, or events at the parks cup. She was always there enjoying whatever show we were putting on.
