Obituary of William Smith

Smith, William B. Jr., age 88, a longtime resident of Wyckoff, died Thursday, November 6, 2014 at his home. Bill was born in Highland Park, NJ and lived in Wyckoff for many years where he raised his family before retiring to reside in Mahwah. Bill was an Army veteran having served during World War II. He was a member of Wyckoff Reformed Church, Activities Unlimited, the Indian Trail Club and had volunteered in the Transport Department of The Valley Hospital. In his early years, he began his career with Becton Dickinson, Franklin Lakes, working his way up the corporate ladder, retiring as an Executive after 33 years. Bill is survived by four children; William B. Smith, III of Wyckoff, Melissa Shiel of Wyckoff, Heidi Haskell of Truckee, CA and Amy Richardson of Salem, OR. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren; Emily Rose, Casey Haskell, Hailey Haskell, Liam Smith, Eamon Smith, Zachary Smith, Conor Smith, Ted Shiel, Caroline Shiel, William Shiel, Rebecca Richardson, Olivia Richardson and Charles Richardson and one great granddaughter, Piper Rose. Bill is also survived by the mother of his children, Nancy Hill. He was predeceased by his second wife, Aileen (Murray) Smith and his dear friend, Beverly Durfee. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, November 9, 2014 from 2:00-5:00 pm at the Vander Plaat Funeral Home, www.vpfh.com, 257 Godwin Avenue, Wyckoff, NJ 07481. A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, November 10, 2014, 11:00 AM at Wyckoff Reformed Church, 580 Wyckoff Avenue, Wyckoff, NJ. The interment will follow at Wyckoff Reformed Church Cemetery. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions in Bill's memory may be made to Julia's Butterfly Foundation, 637 Wyckoff Avenue, Suite 285, Wyckoff, NJ 07481.
