Obituary of Walter H. Poppe

POPPE, Walter H., age 84, of Franklin Lakes, formerly of Waldwick, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 12, 2017. Born on October 27, 1932 in Hackensack, New Jersey, he was the first son to Louise (Hauck) Poppe and Herman C. Poppe. Walter spent his childhood in Lyndhurst. He served in the Air Police division of the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He married Marjorie A. Tauber, also of Lyndhurst, on November 26, 1955 in Elkton, Maryland. Moving to Waldwick in 1964, Walter worked for several years as an over the road truck driver for Mohegan Lines of Carlstadt. He worked thereafter for Sietsma Corp. of Waldwick, and eventually became a partner in Walter H. Poppe General Contractors, Inc. of HoHoKus and Franklin Lakes. Walter was active in the Waldwick Lions Club for over 30 years, and was honored as a Life Member. He is survived by his son, Glen P. Poppe and his wife Gina A. Makoujy of Franklin Lakes; daughter in law Maureen Poppe of Waldwick; son John Poppe and his wife Allison of Garfield; and daughter-in-law Deborah Poppe of Sloatsburg, New York. He leaves a legacy of eight grandchildren; Wayne and his wife Jessie, Wesley, Wade, Christopher, Catherine and her husband Nick, Alexandra, Taylor, and Jaxx; four great-grandchildren; Logan, Kyle, Quinn and Finnian; and many loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by son Wayne W. Poppe in 2000; wife Marjorie A. Poppe on May 11, 2016; son Jeffrey A. Poppe on August 5, 2016; and brother Warren Poppe on December 6, 2016. Family and friends will be received at the Vander Plaat Funeral Home, 257 Godwin Avenue, Wyckoff, on Friday, March 17, 2017, from 9:00 am until 11:00 am, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:30 am at Most Blessed Sacrament RC Church, 787 Franklin Lake Road, Franklin Lakes. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery, 742 Rutherford Avenue, Lyndhurst.
