Obituary of Donald Aker

Aker, Donald C., age 90 of Wyckoff, after a courageous battle for life, died Tuesday, October 19, 2010. Born in Trenton, NJ he lived in Hackensack before moving to Wyckoff in 1960. Don was a WW II Navy veteran who served in the Pacific as a navigator aboard the USS Triangulum. Before his retirement, he was employed at Allis-Chalmers, New York City, and more recently at the Power Authority of the State of New York, White Plains. He was a member of the Wyckoff Reformed Church and was involved in Boy Scout Troop 89. Don was an avid reader, particularly of historical biographies, and active well into his 80's with golf, tennis and daily three mile walks. Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Helen L. (nee Wood) Aker of Wyckoff; his daughter, Elizabeth A. Sheldon of Newton, NJ; his sons, Eric M. Aker of Medfield, MA; Gregory R. Aker of Oakland, CA; Bruce W. Aker of Kirkland, WA; and Douglas R. Aker of Chelmsford, MA. Also surviving are his 10 grandchildren. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 10-12 noon at the Vander Plaat Funeral Home, www.vpfh.com, 257 Godwin Ave. Wyckoff, NJ. A funeral service at 12 noon will follow. Interment will be held at the Redeemer Cemetery, Mahwah. Memorial contributions to the NJ Chapter American Parkinson Disease Association, PO Box 2026, Edison, NJ 08818 would be appreciated.
