Obituary of Mary Smith

Smith, Mary M. (nee Purdie) age 97 of Mahwah died Thursday, October 14, 2010. Born in Rutherglen, Scotland she came to the United States in 1948 and lived in Wyckoff before moving to Mahwah 7 years ago. Mary was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church, Ridgewood and was the oldest living member. She was an artist and well known in her field of counted cross stitch, quilting, knitting and crocheting. Surviving are her children, John J. Smith and his wife Judy, Alex Smith and his wife Sharon, Anne C, Melvin, and Alan C. Smith and his wife Joanne. Also surviving are five grandchildren and several great-grandchildren, her brother, William Purdie of Butler and her sister, Christine Watts of Scotland as well as her extended family, Derek and his wife Gillian Walmsley and their children of the UK. She was predeceased by her husband James J. Smith in 1994, two grandsons, James K. Smith in 1970 and Scott J. Smith in 1995. Visiting, Sunday 2-6 pm at the Vander Plaat Funeral Home, www.vpfh.com, 257 Godwin Avenue, Wyckoff, NJ. Funeral Service Monday 10 am at the Funeral Home, followed by the interment in Laurel Grove Memorial Park, Totowa. In lieu of flowers donations to My Sisters Circle, P.O. Box 84, Timonium, MD 21094 would be appreciated.
