Obituary of Alan Welty

WELTY, Alan M. Jr., 76, of North Haledon, died peacefully July 19, 2010, at the Valley Hospital in Ridgewood surrounded by members of his family. He is survived by his high school sweetheart and loving wife of 54 years, Carlota "Teakie" (nee Henriques), three children, Carolyn McManus, Janice Holding and her husband Andrew, Alan M. Welty, III and his wife Lori, along with six grandchildren - Sarah McManus, Alan and Charlotte Holding, Morgan, Mikayla, and Madison Welty, as well as his brother Richard of Atlanta, GA. Alan led a rich life. He grew up in Larchmont, NY where he became an Eagle Scout and earned the Order of the Arrow. He graduated from Mamaroneck High School in 1952 and Dartmouth College in 1956, where he was a member of the Glee Club, the "Injunaires," and Kappa Kappa Kappa fraternity. Alan served in the United States Army from 1956-1958. Alan's professional career spanned several decades, working first for Metropolitan Life in NYC and then Liggett & Myers/Liggett Group in Durham, NC. The company moved to Mahwah, NJ under the umbrella of Grand Met USA where Alan served as Director of Reward Systems, Compensation, and Benefits until his retirement in 1988. For almost 50 years, Alan was a member of the University Glee Club of NYC, where he served on the Board of Directors for 12 years as Secretary, Treasurer, Vice President and Director at Large, and as President from 1995-1997. He was a member of two small singing groups, the Crickets and The Ten. Singing gave Alan such joy throughout his life. Alan was a member of Wyckoff Reformed Church where he sang in the choir and served on the Board of Deacons. After he retired from Grand Met, Alan became involved with Activities Unlimited (AU), where he served as Chorus Director, participated in the AU Guys Band, and was Chairman of the Transportation Committee. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, October 2 at 11 am at the Wyckoff Reformed Church, 580 Wyckoff Avenue, Wyckoff, NJ.
