Obituary of John Smid

SMID, Dr. John B., age 79, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, April 19, 2010. Born in Fair Lawn, John lived in Franklin Lakes for over fifty years. While serving his country in the United States Air Force, John met and married his beloved Marilyn at the Ernest Harmon Air Force Base in Newfoundland, Canada. After honorable discharge, he moved his family to Franklin Lakes and began a career as a self-employed family dentist. John served in the church as a deacon and elder and was, most recently a member of the West Side Presbyterian Church of Ridgewood. John was a member of the Christian Medical Society, the Luke Society, and the American Bible Society. He was a dental consultant with the Christian Health Care Center for twenty five years, for the Holland Christian Home for fifteen years and with Campus Crusade for Christ in Russia. He also was a counselor for the Billy Graham Crusade. John is survived by his beloved wife Marilyn, to whom he was married for fifty one wonderful years, his dear son John B., Jr. and wife Rocio Smid of Haledon and his dear daughter Karen J. and husband David Lyman of Midland Park. He is also survived by his dear grandchildren; Kristina, Melody and John, his great-grandaughter Annabelle, his sister Kathleen and husband Edwin Gorter of Waldwick and brother Robert and wife Beverly Smid of Wyckoff. Cremation was private. A memorial service will take place on Sunday, June 6, 2010, 3:00 PM, at West Side Presbyterian Church, 6 South Monroe Street, Ridgewood, NJ 07450. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to West Side Presbyterian Church, would be appreciated. Arrangements by the Vander Plaat Funeral Home of Wyckoff (www.vpfh.com)
