Obituary of Elizabeth Lemmon

Lemmon, Elizabeth Anne "Betty", nee Barr age 88, beloved wife of Earl Scott Lemmon, passed away surrounded by her loving family after a short illness resulting from a stroke. She was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. Betty and Scott began their married life in Lyndhurst, Ohio where they raised three of their daughters. They were both active in a variety of organizations, community activities and church. Betty graduated from Ohio University with a bachelor degree in education in 1943. She taught kindergarten for many years before she taught in the Waldwick school system where she served as a substitute teacher in grades K though 12 for more than 30 years. After retirement she was active in the Intergenerational literacy opportunity organization (IGLOO). She was a lifetime swimmer and lifeguard. Betty swam across Cayuga Lake in New York State 3 times and participated in Aquacise classes at the Ridgewood "Y" until last week. Betty was an active member of the Highlands Presbyterian Church, Allendale since 1971. She sang in the choir for 35 years and was an elder and frequent worship chair. She recently joined a chimes choir. She was active in Girl Scouts since 1956 and a recent member of the Bergen council's chapter of the Evergreen program. Betty enjoyed travel, camping and other group activities. She presented the "Green Circle", a diversity program, to thousands of elementary school children, Brownie and Junior Scouts. She traveled with the group to Europe, Asia and Florida. Surviving is her husband of 65 years, Earl Scott Lemmon, 4 daughters, Linda Durham (Dick deceased) of Shaker Heights, OH, Gail Lloyd (Rick) of Newark, DE, Roberta Phelps (Scott) of Shaker Heights, OH and Janet McGovern (Brian) of Brookfield, CT, 11 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren and a sister, Louise Barr of Ithaca, NY. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 3-6 pm at the VanderPlaat Funeral Home, www.vpfh.com, 257 Godwin Ave. Wyckoff, NJ. A Memorial Service will be held Monday 11 am at the Funeral Home. Private Cremation will be held. In lieu of flowers donations to the Highlands Presbyterian Church, 270 Franklin Tpk. Allendale, NJ 07401 would be appreciated.
