Obituary of Elmer Uhlig

Uhlig, Elmer age 85 of Wyckoff died peacefully Sunday, September 27, 2009 at the Christian Health Care Center, Wyckoff, NJ. Born and raised in Hawthorne, Elmer moved to and resided in Wyckoff for the past 52 years. Elmer served as a Glider Pilot Flight Officer, in the Army Air Corp. during World War II, where he attained the rank of Lieutenant. After the War with the assistance of the GI Bill, Elmer received his education that allowed him to become an industrial pattern and model design engineer. Working up from an entry level position, Elmer eventually become the owner/operator of Archer & McCartney Inc., Haledon, NJ, an industrial pattern research and design engineering firm, until his semi-retirement in 2003. While Elmer had many outside interests and activities, his main form of recreation was golfing, usually at his home course of High Mountain Golf Club, Franklin Lakes, NJ, where the friendship's he developed were amongst his most treasured. Surviving is his beloved wife of 61 years, Lillian (Billie) (nee Schweizer) Uhlig of Wyckoff, his devoted son Don and his wife Brenda of Wyckoff, his daughter, Leslie Schmidt and her husband Frank of Clifton. His beloved grandchildren, Blair, Michael, Collin, Keith, Alicia and Ashley. Also surviving is his sister, Dorothy Van Ness of Bloomfield, NJ and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, William Uhlig. Family will receive friends on Wednesday, 2-4 and 7-8:30 pm at the Vander Plaat Funeral Home, (www.vphf.com) 257 Godwin Ave. Wyckoff, NJ. A brief service of remembrance will be held at 8:30 pm. Private cremation will be held. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675.
