Smith, Edwin G. age 87 of Waldwick died Saturday, July 11, 2009. Born in England on November 29, 1921 he worked for Harrods Dept. Store for five years. He joined the Royal Navy at the start of WW II and spent five years on an American built mine sweeper in charge of the mining equipment. Edwin retired as an Electrician for Actel Lucent, Kearny, NJ in 1979. He, among others, where instrumental in founding the Waldwick Soccer program. Edwin enjoyed going to the matches long after working with the teams. Surviving is his wife, Catherine (nee MacDonald) Smith, his sons, Bill Smith of Bergenfield and Ian Smith of Lake Mary, FL. Also surviving are his 6 grandchildren; Bonnie Eckstein, Amy Masso, Stephanie and Megan Smith, Kate Jaeger and Andrew Bartkus and his 7 great grandchildren; James, Christian, Alexander, Benjamin, Caleb, Jeremy and Aegis. He was predeceased by his daughter, Sandra Bartkus. Visiting Tuesday 7-9 pm at the Vander Plaat Funeral Home, 257 Godwin Ave. Wyckoff, NJ. Funeral Service Wednesday 10:30 am at the Funeral Home.
