Obituary of Michael S. Longo

Michael S. Longo entered into his heavenly home on June 30, 2017, surrounded by his loving family.  He was born in Brooklyn, NY, and lived in Glendale, NY, Washingtonville, NY and Ft. Pierce, FL.

Michael was the beloved husband of Jeanne (Hunter) Longo and devoted loving father of Bettina (Longo) Grotheer and husband, Kurt and son, Michael J. Longo and fiancé Janet Hunter.  He was the loving grandfather of Kristen and John Grotheer and Gina and Mia Longo.   He is survived by his beloved sister, Marie DiGiovanni. 

Michael served seven years in the military services.  He joined the Army at 14 ½ years old and completed his basic training at Ft. Bliss, TX.  His last four years in the service were in the US Navy serving on the USS Coolbaugh and the USS Yosemite.  He earned his BS in Criminal Justice at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, Mahattan, NY.

After the Navy, Michael was in the NYPD for 20 years as Patrolman, Detective and Sergeant in such areas as the Tactical Patrol Force, Youth Squad, Robbery Squad, Auto Squad and Detective Units in areas of Manhattan, the Bronx and Queens, NY.  Michael was interested in many things including get-togethers with family and friends, swimming, cooking and music.  His strong faith in God and his family were the things closest to his heart above all.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, from 2 – 4 and 7 – 9 pm at the Vander Plaat Funeral Home, www.vpfh.com,  257 Godwin Avenue, Wyckoff, NJ 07481.  A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, 10:30 am at St. Paul’s RC Church, 200 Wyckoff Avenue, Ramsey, NJ 07446.  The entombment will follow at Mount St. Mary’s Cemetery, Queens, NY.  As an expression of sympathy, in lieu of flowers, donations in Michael’s memory may be made to NYC PBA Widows and Childrens Fund, Inc. 125 Broad Street, 11th Floor, New York, NY  10004-2400.
