Obituary of Dorothy Hazen

Dorothy Hazen, (nee Hodel) age 93 of Wyckoff peacefully entered Glory on Friday, April 14, 2017. Born in Hawthorne she was a lifelong resident until recently moving to Wyckoff where she resided at the Christian Health Care Center. Dot lived much of her life in the same house where she was born, and where she married Garret Hazen, and then raised her own family. She was voted “Class Radical” of Hawthorne High School’s Class of 1940, and enjoyed seeing three of her children and four of her grandchildren graduate from the same high school. Dorothy attended Hawthorne Gospel Church for three decades, where she was active in the choir and the church’s women’s Missionaides group. She was a member of Cornerstone Christian Church, where her son-in-law pastors, and also volunteered her time for Lighthouse Pregnancy Resource Center of Northern NJ. Although she held few paid jobs during her lifetime, Dot invested her time in many worthwhile activities, including caring for her grandchildren so that her children could serve in their churches and other non-profit organizations. Some of Dot’s favorite things in life were cooking and caring for her family, watching her grandchildren participate in school and sports activities, singing, going to church, talking and eating meals with friends, and sharing her faith in Jesus Christ. While she rarely traveled far from home, she made a two-month trip to Irian Jaya, Indonesia, in the early 1980s when her daughter’s family were living there as missionaries. Wherever she went, Dot never failed to make friends with her outgoing personality and love for people. 2 Timothy 4:7 “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.” Surviving, are her children, Deborah (Hazen) Provencher and her husband Fred of Hawthorne, NJ, Kathleen (Hazen) Tucker and her husband David of Westland, MI and Robert Hazen and his wife Barbara of Austin, TX, (formerly of Midland Park, NJ). Also surviving are her grandchildren, Alyssa, Justin, Emily, Abigial Provencher; Andrew & Kara Hazen; Kim (Hazen) and David Kriebel; Amy Hazen; Gwendolyn (Tucker) and Eric Heathcock; Kristen (Tucker) and Adam McLane; and her 10 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Garret Hazen in 2000, her daughter, Joan Hazen in 1947, her sisters, Catherine Galenkamp and Helen Van Dyk and her brother Albert Hodel. The family will receive friends on Thursday, April 20, 2017 from 2-4 and 6-9 pm at Cornerstone Christian Church, 495 Wyckoff Ave., Wyckoff, NJ 07481. A Celebration of her life will be held on Friday at 10 am at the Church, followed by the interment at Fair Lawn Memorial Cemetery, Fair Lawn, NJ. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lighthouse Pregnancy Resource Center, P.O. Box 227, Hawthorne, NJ 07507 or Mandata, 7360 S. Kingston Court, Westland, MI 48185.
